The AI boom is fueled by massive investments, with record valuations and deals happening left and right. Companies like OpenAI and Nvidia are making huge deals with cloud infrastructure companies, while giants like Amazon, Microsoft, and Google are pouring billions into building data centers. This rapid expansion is driven by the soaring demand for AI, but it's also raising eyebrows.
But here's where it gets controversial... The enormous debt used to finance these data centers has many experts worried that the spending spree might be unsustainable. Economic bubbles are a well-known phenomenon: asset prices in a specific market quickly rise, often due to speculation or overenthusiasm, followed by a sudden crash when prices drop.
This debate reignited late last year after Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang dismissed fears of a possible AI bust during the company's third-quarter earnings call. He stated, "There's been a lot of talk about an AI bubble. From our vantage point, we see something very different."
However, others aren't so sure. Michael Burry, the investor famous for predicting the 2008 housing crisis, has drawn parallels between the current AI spending and the dot-com bubble of the late 1990s. In an essay, he wrote, "Sometimes, we see bubbles. Sometimes, there is something to do about it. Sometimes, the only winning move is not to play."
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman also weighed in, stating, "Are we in a phase where investors as a whole are overexcited about AI? My opinion is yes. Is AI the most important thing to happen in a very long time? My opinion is also yes."

CNBC scored each person's remarks on a scale from 0 to 10 on two factors: How much they believe that AI is in a bubble (0 being no and 10 being yes) and how concerned they are about it (0 being not concerned at all and 10 being very concerned).
